Cleaning up asynchronous React effects

Problem#

An asynchronous operation can complete after its component unmounts and attempt a state update.

Solution#

Return a cleanup function from useEffect. Cancel the operation when possible; otherwise, use an effect-local flag so its callback updates state only while that effect remains active. Set the effect dependencies correctly.

Failure Modes#

• A mount flag prevents the state update but does not cancel wasted work.
• Incorrect dependencies can leave callbacks using stale values.
